About the event
Considering the fact that eating is an essential function of human beings, one would think it would be more straightforward. Unfortunately, there are many conflicting variables that one must asses when deciding what and how to eat. Cultural influences, geographical access, and overall convenience all play large roles in how people eat and how they view their food options. We all know that person who is vegan, gluten free, and adds bee pollen [and other things I can't spell] into their smoothies… are these habits due to societal and economic factors? In this Salon, we will discuss the ethics behind the food system, how we treat animals, and what we are told is good to eat. Should the government help protect us from unhealthy items as they attempt to do with tobacco? Should the food industry be more transparent about how it makes the food we consume? Should people be obligated to eat in a more sustainable way?
